The 19-year-old, aged 19, appeared via phone at the local court in South Australia on that day, charged with a single charge of damaging property. In a statement at the time of the September incident, the municipal authorities said that CCTV footage captured a person placing fake eyes on the sculpture, which residents have nicknamed the “Cast in Blue”. The accused made no plea and informed the judge she was unwell, according to media sources, with the magistrate recommending her to find a legal representative before her upcoming hearing in December. The affected sculpture after the stickers were removed. The following day the reported event, the local mayor stated that repairs to the much-loved public artwork would be costly as the stickers could not be removed without damaging the art piece. “This wilful damage to a cherished public artwork is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor said in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also disappointing to those people of our society who have embraced Cast in Blue.” She added the local government would pursue the “significant” repair costs from those responsible for the damage. When the sculpture was initially suggested, it drew varied responses from the area residents due to its price tag and appearance. Priced at 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the sculpture depicts a mythical megafauna, with the creators influenced by an ancient anteater-like marsupial found in local caves that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”. Cast in Blue is its official name but residents nicknamed the artwork the ‘Blue Blob’.
