Elections Underway in the Netherlands as Polls Point to Possible Repeat Victory for Firebrand Leader Geert Wilders

Elections are now in progress for general elections in the Netherlands, with recent surveys indicating that the far-right firebrand Geert Wilders and his PVV party may repeat their emerge victorious, though analysts suggest the party is unlikely of being part of the future coalition.

Survey Results and Political Landscape

Wilders' party, which previously pulled off a surprise top result and formed a four-party all-conservative government that lasted barely a year, is now slightly leading in the polls and is forecast to secure between 24 and 28 MPs in the 150-seat parliament.

Nevertheless, PVV's support has dipped since 2023, when it secured 37 parliamentary seats. Every significant political group have stated they will not entering into a coalition with Wilders, and who triggered the fall of the previous government in June over a dispute concerning his controversial anti-refugee proposals.

Key Contenders and Forecasts

Following a campaign focused on topics such as immigration, medical expenses, and the nation's severe housing shortage, the centre-left GL/PvdA coalition, led by ex-EU official Frans Timmermans, is running a close second, expected to win between 22 and 26 parliamentary seats.

Also forecast to do well is the centrist Democrats 66, projected to increase its seat count by almost five times to 21-25 seats, while the centre-right CDA is expected to significantly increase its seat tally to between 18 and 22.

Members of the previous government – comprising the PVV, liberal-conservative VVD, BBB, and NSC – are all forecast to see their representation reduced, with several facing heavy losses.

Electoral System and Political Division

In the Netherlands' electoral system, securing just 0.67% of the vote yields a party a seat in parliament. Of the 27 parties contesting the election – which include senior-focused parties, for youth, animal rights parties, basic income advocates, and for sport – as many as 16 may gain entry to parliament.

This significant division means that no single party is ever likely to win a majority, and the Netherlands has been governed by multi-party governments – often including several groups in the last few administrations – for over 100 years.

Post-Election Scenarios

The PVV leader claimed that "the democratic process would end" in the country if the PVV becomes the biggest group yet is excluded from power. But, critics and analysts argue that first place does not guarantee government participation and that any coalition with a majority is a democratic outcome.

Although the election result is uncertain and coalition talks may require months, political observers suggest that following the most extreme government in its recent history, the next Dutch cabinet is expected to be a broad-based alliance headed by either the moderate left or centrist right.

Election Day Details

Polling stations, including those in the miniature city Madurodam in the capital and the Anne Frank museum in the capital city, began operations at 7:30 AM (6.30am GMT) and will conclude at 9:00 PM. A typically reliable post-voting survey is expected shortly after closing time.

After the vote, an informateur will explore potential governing alliances that could secure enough support in the legislature. Potential partners will then negotiate an agreement for the coming term and must undergo a vote of confidence in parliament before taking office.
