How It Happened The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence near Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s. All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police. Investigation Developments One male and one female were arrested at the site and a third person who ran away following the blast was apprehended soon after. Each of them have been transported to hospital. The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the location revealed the property turned into a mass of wreckage. “This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times. Financial Context The leader of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the property was under an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the property owners. Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect a family member triggered the detonation. “As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed the media. A propane tank had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our officers,” he added. Molotov cocktails were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed. Injuries and Destruction Those injured by the blast included 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member. Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service. The official believed the detonation had occurred on a level above the access point and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”. Community Reaction “We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, noting that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted. “The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.” Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
