Resident Physicians in the UK to Begin Five Consecutive Day Walkout in November

Doctors in England are preparing to begin a five-day walkout in November, due to disputes regarding pay and employment.

Walkout Information

The BMA announced that resident doctors will walk out for five days in a row from 7am on 14 November to November 19 at 7am.

Resident doctors, who constitute about half of all doctors in the NHS, are proceeding with the strike after unsuccessful talks with the health department.

Causes of the Walkout

Dr Jack Fletcher stated, “This is not where we wanted to be. We have spent the last week in talks with government, urging the health minister to resolve the scandal of doctors going unemployed.”

“We know from our own survey half of second-year doctors in England are facing unemployment, their skills going to waste whilst countless individuals wait endlessly for treatment and hospital shifts remain vacant. This is a situation which cannot go on.”

He continued, “We talked with the government in good faith, keen for the minister to understand that a agreement including options to gradually reverse the pay reductions over several years, giving newly trained doctors a raise of only £1 per hour for the coming four years.”

“We hoped the authorities would see that our asks are not just fair but are in the best interests of the community and our patients and would also help stop our doctors departing from the NHS.”

Who Are Resident Physicians?

Resident doctors have anywhere up to eight years’ experience practicing in hospitals, based on their field, or up to three years in primary care.

Further information are expected shortly.
